There is little doubt that this book is well written and thoroughly researched, but your opinion of it will largely come down to your world view. Your answers to questions like "Is housing a right?" or "Should everyone be able to live in a city?" will determine whether you will get on board with the author's cause.I came to this book from the perspective of someone living in a blighted second tier city in the deep south, while hearing my friends living in New York and Portland decry the evils of gentrification. These are very different urban situations, with one struggling from a lack of capital, while the other is being forever changed by a "wave of capital". As someone who sees neo-liberal policies and urban development generally as a good thing, this book helped broaden my perspective. The book is written as a panacea for all urban areas, and the author seems to assume that everyone will share his view. It's important to remember that every housing market is different.I recommend this book, but I encourage readers to go deeper and read alternative views like Richard Florida.

The book does a good job of putting words around the complicated feelings and impact of gentrification. Though slightly repetitive at times, the case studies cited are good examples of the drivers of gentrification, as well as the impact on local residents. The five page scathing critique of suburbs is worth the price of the book. If you care about learning about the tangible effects of the US’s decades long history of racist housing policy and rising income inequality, then this book is a must read.

Last year on a cable channel EPIX, they had a series called America Divided and a segment was done on the housing crisis in New York. I believe this book is a continuation of sorts on that series. Case in point: a woman lived in an apartment building that was being renovated all around her. The only thing between a young man operating a jack hammer and her wall was a sheet of plastic. I could not believe my eyes. She had to put up with the incredible noise and dust swirling all around her. The landlord wanted her out and in spite of her living there, he was determined to get rid of her and her grandson one way or another. Since then I have seen gentrification begin right In my own small city and luxury apartments are being built but no low income dwellings are even considered. Recently in my city in Central Florida someone posted a picture taken of a bald eagle family gazing at the destruction of their homestead. Their nest was probably among the trees that were being destroyed to make way for yet another business or growth proposal. A few years ago a protest was held in an area near downtown Orlando where the people chanted "where are we supposed to go". Gone are the neighborhoods that I remember where everything you needed was almost within walking distance If not, a short bus trip would take you there. I guess money is more important than community. But where will it end? The middle class is virtually being destroyed daily and a luxury apartment is just that - a luxury few will be able to afford. We will be left with quiet enclaves where there will be designer shops, quaint coffee houses and nothing else. No kids in the streets, no neighborhoods, just playgrounds for the rich. Meanwhile the poor are thrust further and further into the suburbs with limited services. I read in scripture that Jesus said the poor will always be among us, but He didn't mean that we are to abandon them and we all will be judged for it. I don't want to hear Him say I put the interest of the rich before those who need our help. I am sure He won't be pleased. The future looks grim.

Very informative book but gave little hope for ways to afford change. It did help me recognize the progress our city is making toward these results which is quite discouraging. If you're want to learn the practices cities create and support that causes the death of the historic cultures of large cities, this is your book. We read this as a neighborhood group and it was a great springboard for education and information.

Excellent book! For anyone who wants to hear about the ups and downs on gentrification. The book also gives a history on the idea, what its goals actually are, how some see the good and some see the bad, stats and allows you to come to your own conclusion

Middle entries in a trilogy are always complicated. You don’t get that exhilaration of a new story, nor the joys of watching plotlines end; instead, you’re watching pieces move around, setting up the finale yet to come. They’re hard books to write, and hard ones to evaluate on their own terms. And if anything, Before They Are Hanged has an even bigger problem: the lack of obvious structure of The First Law trilogy. So many fantasy series have an obvious endgame – the destruction of the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings, the Iron Throne in A Song of Ice and Fire, the Last Battle in The Wheel of Time, and so forth. But The First Law doesn’t have any such obvious structure or endgame that’s apparent yet. There’s a country in peril of two different invaders (as well as a peasant uprising), the journey of a powerful wizard to retrieve a dangerous object, and a slew of more personal plotlines ongoing, and no immediately obvious place for them all to go.And yet, for all of that, Before They Are Hanged works not just as a middle book, but as a book on its own terms, delivering an even better tale than The Blade Itself, outstanding character work, incredible action, great plot development, and such rich worldbuilding and evolution that you’ll be hard-pressed to stop for even a moment.Much of that joy comes from author Joe Abercrombie’s outstanding ability to let his characters live and breathe, and more than that, to let them evolve and change. If The Blade Itself represented the setup for the series, Before They Are Hanged is the section where the characters begin to be shaped by – and shape – events around them in fascinating ways. Logen “Bloody Nine” Ninefingers begins to reveal exactly how he became the leader he once was held to be, as well as showing signs of the human being under the grizzled warrior. Sand dan Glokta, the mutilated prisoner, is still capable of brutal and horrendous acts, but also shows himself capable of incredible leadership – and surprising mercy. And Jezal dan Luthar, the arrogant swordsman, begins to see the world beyond himself for the first time. It’s all done wonderfully, with care and slow patience, and it gives the book a richness and warmth that’s often lost in the plotting of an epic fantasy trilogy. But Abercrombie proves to be no slouch at all the trappings of the genre, either. Before They Were Hanged delivers some absolutely fantastic battle sequences, and Abercrombie shows himself equally capable of handling both the big picture as generals watch the fronts battle and the up-close and personal one-on-one combat, with the latter delivering some truly brutal and disturbing violence at times. More than that, he knows when to use it and when to leave it offscreen, allowing the incidents to occur when they matter most, and when they can impact the story or the characters as much as possible. And then, beyond that, there’s the rich story, which manages to follow two very different martial fronts and a quest to the edge of the world, and weave between them effortlessly and yet perfectly, allowing each plot to come in at the maximum point where tension can be drawn out. More than that, Abercrombie lets each story follow its own pace, which lets the books feel less plot-driven and more driven by the characters and the world, something that so often fails in epic fantasy series. And yes, it’s all done with Abercrombie’s pitch-perfect mix of cynicism, black humor, character work, and skilled writing. As I’ve said, I’m still not entirely sure where The First Law trilogy is going…but that’s okay. Because every storyline, and every character in them, is riveting enough on any number of levels to keep me reading, and render me excited that there’s more books set in this world, and had me opening up the third and final book within seconds of finishing this one. It’s all really become one of my favorite fantasy series in recent memory, one that draws on any number of inspirations while still feeling like its own unique, standout creation.

Before they are Hanged is the second volume of The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. The First Law Trilogy along with a handful of other volumes are considered "must reads" by anyone who claims to be a grimdark fan. Whether or not this is the case is a matter of opinion but they are gritty, visceral, down-to-Earth fantasy with a lot of moral ambiguity as well as lack of pretension. They are the warm beer of fantasy and not the horribly watered down stuff we Americans produce, Samuel Adams exempted, but the good European stuff. The First Law Trilogy is a earthy lager with a rich working man's taste and...okay, I've wandered off topic. I also want a beer. In the previous volume of the series, archwizard Bayaz collected a ragtag collection of misfits to retrieve magical Maguffin which seemed deliberately designed to deconstruct as many of these fantasy road-trips as possible. This book picks up their journey where the previous one left off and allows us to reach a startling conclusion. It's a conclusion I only once before encountered in these kinds of stories, Young Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Peacock's Eye, which felt out of place there but worked here. I've claimed elsewhere The First Law Trilogy works well as the "spiritual antithesis" of The Lord of the Rings and that's never more apparent in the Bayaz portion of the plot. It's the equivalent of Gandalf leading Conan, Red Sonja, the most obnoxious shining knight in the world, a complete idiot for a navigator, and his apprentice on a quest for the One Ring to use against an Arabic Sauron. While this is happening, Colonel West is leading an invasion of the North which is criminally under-supplied as well as poorly trained. Very few fantasy novels show invading armies crippled by disease, desertion, starvation, and poor training but these were daily parts of life in Medieval warfare. Likewise, Inquisitor Glotka, my favorite character, is given the unenviable task of attempting to hold a poorly-defended city-state against the infinite hordes of the Gurka army. We also have Dogman and his gang which is a group of Northmen hard to describe but basically would make a wonderful television series to follow. They don't do much but damn if they're not always entertaining while they're doing it. Much of the book's appeal is, essentially, how ruthlessly unsentimental the storytelling is about the fantasy genre. While never approaching parody, just about everyone has it made clear how awful war is and how utterly pointless the concept of causes in most of them are. Glokta is holding a city he can't hold but which he's doing so solely because it's a point of pride to the Union to hold it, no matter how many people are killed. Logen Ninefingers tries to explain how he regrets the path which lead him to become a famous warrior but might as well be speaking Greek to young Luthar. Ferro, who has known nothing but violence, wants to make a human connection with Logen but finds neither of them is capable of doing so easily. I enjoyed the world-building for The First Law world a great deal. We get the backstory of the wizards, ancient empires, as well as some personal insight into the characters not detailed in the first book. Part of what I like about the book is Joe Abercrombie leave hints the stories we hear from Bayaz and other characters aren't the whole truth. Another thing which makes this series so memorable is there's very few objectively true perspectives. The Gurkish Empire is portrayed as a horrific threat led by a False Prophet and his cannibal wizards but this view of them is as ignorant as the view they are no worse than any other ruler. Peace-makers and warmongers are equally ignorant with distrustworthy characters manipulating events from behind the scenes. Ignorant and stupid leadership is also more dangerous than outright evil. You know, just like in real-life. The moral ambiguity of the series is one of its best features with heroes, anti-heroes, villains, and everything in-between existing. The heroes can't automatically make the world a better place, though, and the villains may be better for society in the long run. Hell, the heroes may actually be working at cross purposes (what a novel concept). Astute readers will appreciate the opportunity to judge for themselves about the characters' actions. For example, Inquisitor Glokta is a torturer and supporter of a corrupt regime who doesn't even believe in his superiors but does horrible deeds in their name. Despite this, I find him one of the most fascinating antiheroes in grimdark. After all, if every way is dark, why not walk boldly in the path which appeals to you most? Don't answer that. In conclusion, Before they are Hanged is an excellent book. It's mostly set up for the conclusion in the next volume but resolves several outstanding plots. I suggest everyone who has an interest in dark, gritty, and morally ambiguous fantasy fiction would find the First Law Trilogy a good read. It's a story not afraid to have the heroes set out to do something epic, sacrifice everything to get it accomplished, and still fail due to circumstances beyond their control.10/10

From the Back Cover

Systems Thinking, Systems Practice "Whether by design, accident or merely synchronicity, Checkland appears to have developed a habit of writing seminal publications near the start of each decade which establish the basis and framework for systems methodology research for that decade." Hamish Rennie, Journal of the Operational Research Society, 1992 Thirty years ago Peter Checkland set out to test whether the Systems Engineering (SE) approach, highly successful in technical problems, could be used by managers coping with the unfolding complexities of organizational life. The straightforward transfer of SE to the broader situations of management was not possible, but by insisting on a combination of systems thinking strongly linked to real-world practice Checkland and his collaborators developed an alternative approach - Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) - which enables managers of all kinds and at any level to deal with the subtleties and confusions of the situations they face. This work established the now accepted distinction between 'hard' systems thinking, in which parts of the world are taken to be 'systems' which can be 'engineered', and 'soft' systems thinking in which the focus is on making sure the process of inquiry into real-world complexity is itself a system for learning. Systems Thinking, Systems Practice (1981) and Soft Systems Methodology in Action (1990) together with an earlier paper Towards a Systems-based Methodology for Real-World Problem Solving (1972) have long been recognized as classics in the field. Now Peter Checkland has looked back over the three decades of SSM development, brought the account of it up to date, and reflected on the whole evolutionary process which has produced a mature SSM. SSM: A 30-Year Retrospective, here included with Systems Thinking, Systems Practice closes a chapter on what is undoubtedly the most significant single research programme on the use of systems ideas in problem solving. Now retired from full-time university work, Peter Checkland continues his research as a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow.

Basically, the soft systems methodology (SSM) can in effect facilitate the incremental re-engineering of human activity systems without an explicit reverse engineering phase. Such systems are called soft because they present persistently ill-formed problem situations, largely due to their inherent complexity and contingent behavior. These attributes are typically characterized by the lack of consistently repeatable behaviors/outcomes. In particular, they exhibit nondeterminism (due to variabilities of various human agents and their institutions) as well as nonstationarity (per sporadic changes in their makeups and circumstances). Such dynamism of agendas and situations, moreover, serves to vastly complicate the static complexity of human organizations and society. In consequence, their inherent intractability results in the futility of positivist schemes for analyzing or improving them. Accordingly, the SSM or similar approaches are vital in effectively exploring such systems, as well as in incrementally improving them.Checkland and his associates originally attempted to apply typical systems engineering methods in dealing with human activity systems, but soon recognized their unsuitability for dealing with the ill-formed problem situations as endemic to human activities. Similarly, they found general systems theory had nothing of value to offer. They then gravitated to the inquiry system concept espoused by Singer/Churchman as a means of systematically investigating and improving human activities, which the SSM characterizes in its Real World Domain. Complementary systems thinking is performed in a corresponding SSM Systems Thinking Domain. These two SSM partitions together constitute the inquiry system, which can be traversed iteratively to serve as a learning system regarding a target human activity system. The SSM focuses and prompts the learning process, which enables incremental improvements in the targeted system. Conceptually, the SSM is composed of the following seven elements:1. Perceiving - the Problem Situation2. Formulating - the Focal Issues Perspective3. Composing - the Root Definition (of the selected system aspects)4. Predicating - the Conceptual Models5. Comparing - Conceptual Models with the Focal Issues Perspective6. Deciding - Desirable/Feasible Changes7. Activating - Changes to Problem Situation.Elements 3 and 4 reside in the Systems Thinking Domain, and are referred to as Mode 2 or interpretive steps of the SSM. The other elements occur in the Real World Domain, and they are termed Mode 1 or intervention steps. The iterative looping through all seven steps realizes a Singerian inquiry system, which is intended to yield an increasingly accurate characterization of the human activity system’s problem situation. A defined template for the root definition in Element 3 serves as the basis for the conceptual models. They are composed in Element 4 of (nebulous) ideal types of generic elements, as tailored for human activity systems in general. Next, the SSM process tends to ameliorate selected undesirable aspects of the problem situation. Here, judgments regarding the comparative discrepancies between actual and ideal system attributes rely on the use of an adaptation of Vickers’ appreciative system in Element 5, as do decisions regarding remedial options in Element 6. Promising system changes are then introduced in Element 7.In the book’s systems thinking portion (approximately the first 40 per cent), I found the content to be a quite interesting and palatable background survey. However, there seems to be no incisive definition of systems thinking, one that is precise, coherent, and declarative. Various examples and fragmentary rationale do not suffice, especially in view of its broad range of interpretations and applications appearing in the literature at large. Consequently, my impression of systems thinking is that of a catch-all collection of disparate notions and techniques compiled via breadthwise importation of assets of plausible or speculative worth. Systems thinking thus seems to be a sketchy high-level concept whose inherent vagueness and ambiguity can sometimes be exploited opportunistically. In particular, a systems practitioner can morph it into whatever configuration that incident circumstances may suggest. Alas, I remain quite unclear as to what in essence constitutes systems thinking per se; other authors, moreover, reinforce my perplexity. In the systems practice portion of the book, my view of SSM is largely favorable. For example, SSM could support the conjoined exploration of related problem and solution spaces. In general, moreover, I believe that the SSM architecture has considerable promise for such use in engineered physical systems, especially software-based ones. (In my experience, such systems invariably manifest some aspects of soft systems.) An SSM-type approach might for example be valuable when investigating upgrades to an existing engineered system that is poorly structured or documented. Alternatively, the SSM inquiry capability might be used when an existing system is possibly going to be used for different functions, or in different environments. Of course, it would seem that the SSM’s utility for soft systems is beyond dispute, with only a few reservations. Although they would all seem tractable to resolution, my main concerns are:1. the modest scale/depth and large number of problem situations addressed, given the limited time and staffing applied, can hardly suffice to demonstrate ample conclusiveness2. no treatment of certain major concerns for ill-structured human activity systems is presented: nondeterminism, nonstationarity, indefinite boundaries, change side effects, for example3. the utilization of Vickers’ appreciative system concept seems glib and oblique4. by definition holons are elements in a particular form of level structure called a holarchy; an activity level, however, is erroneously conflated with activity flow in SSM.In his thirty-year retrospective, Checkland makes two comments that I found disconcerting. First, he says that the above seven-step SSM process has been simplified to four steps. The seven-step version is already sketchy enough, and it seems that SSM is now devolving to the status of lore. Then, he notes that the handmade diagrams, as contrasted with ones that might be constructed and supported with a drawing tool, are preferable in conveying the provisional stage of their formulation. For many reasons, these handmade drawings would definitely be an impediment to the practical full-scale use of SSM, for clients and systems practitioners alike.Aside from my reservations about the lack of closure of systems thinking coverage in this book, I consider the SSM concept to be quite intriguing and promising overall. Disconcertingly though, there appear to be surprisingly few follow-up publications in recent years that extend of further elaborate SSM. This might in part be attributable to the (apparent) lack of an integrated SSM environment. In any case, SSM would seem to merit further implementation development, especially in that at present it appears to essentially be just an architecture of a methodology, albeit one usable for manual application. Despite the definite appeal of the SSM concept, however, my appreciative system scores the book at only Four Stars.

What is really going on here? If we look solely at the 'problem' we may miss the true picture. Soft Systems thinking, at its core, asks us to see anew, to identify and understand the many variables affecting a situation, process, or operation including our biases and assumptions. In part, this book was written to clearly distinguish hard from soft systems thinking. The original seven stages of soft systems thinking included 1.Entering the problem situation; 2. Expressing the problem situation; 3.Formulating root definitions of relevant systems; 4.Building Conceptual Models of Human Activity Systems; 5.Comparing the models with the real world; 6.Defining changes that are desirable and feasible; and 7.Taking action to improve the real world situation.; and Rather than a linear process, soft systems thinking is an iterative, dialogical process. In the retrospective included in this version - the four activities included: 1) finding out about a problem situation; 2) formulating relevant purposeful activity models; 3) debating the situation seeking both changes that would improve the situation and the accommodations between conflicting interests; and 4) taking action (p. A15).This book is worth its weight for the 30 year retrospective on systems thinking - a wonderful historical summary! An excellent bibliography on systems thinking is also provided!

Useful for my work

This book was recommended by a friend with Systems Engineering expertise, and has become one of my favorite books on the subject.A good balance of humor and serious dialog is maintained.Complete, crisp, and clean descriptions of the many approaches to Systems Theory are discussed and well delineated. An excellent book for all ranges of background and purposes, I highly recommend it as a beginning point or a refresher course.

I had been reading his work for 25 years, this is an exceelent update after all the years. To be recommended to all!

Wordy...unclear...I have to read & organize too much in order to make use of the valuable content.

For anyone who would have a better perspective on Religion in public life here is the example of The Father of Our Country. George Washington public acts concernining religion is looked at. Also we have George Washington's own words to read on the subject of religion. Very good book. Well researched. Needed today when so many think religion has no place in the public.

Tara love your method of approach in all your books, never disappointed :) Keep up the good work!

I really enjoyed this short "treatise" on why it is false to say George Washington was nothing more than a deist.

The authors present George Washington's beliefs on the relationship of church and state in his own words. This is a very insightful book which all Americans should read before forming an opinion on the relationship between church and state.

Love the USA

Amazon.com Review

Why (and How) a Beautiful Kitchen Means Better Food A kitchen's first task is functional: It is a place to produce good food with cleanliness and efficiency. But functionality and beauty go hand in hand. We've met people who seem afraid to have beautiful things in their cooking space—they react in shock and dismay when they see paintings or rugs in a busy kitchen. "What if it gets ruined? That's so nonfunctional!" We couldn't disagree more. Everything in life decays and wears out eventually. Having something you consider beautiful in the kitchen is a nudge toward enjoying the act of cooking, a reminder that food is more than fuel. A beautiful kitchen also helps us remember to clean regularly. When you enjoy your space, even in some small way, it's so much more pleasurable to keep it clean. Once you've worked on your cooking zones and storage capacity, find creative ways to make beauty and functionality go hand in hand. A kitchen you enjoy is one that will motivate you to nourish your household. Here are a few ways to bring a bit of beauty into even the dingiest of kitchens: Enjoy the beauty of food itself. Heap oranges or persimmons in a dish on the countertop (this also will remind you to eat them promptly!). Tomatoes, onions, even sweet potatoes have an earthy beauty that grounds a kitchen. Store herbs with their cut ends in a shallow glass of water, which will keep them fresh and handy for snipping, as well as add a splash of green to your workspace. Cover ugly countertops with a huge butcher block. If you have a tiny and hideous laminate countertop, cover it up with a hefty cutting board, which is more beautiful and also of course very functional. Hang a vibrant work of art. No backsplash? Frame an inexpensive print and hang it behind the stove. Yes, the glass will get greasy eventually, but it's easier to clean glass than a painted wall. Line drawers and cabinets with colorful fabric or paper. Apply fabric wallpaper to the backs of your cabinets using fabric starch; the cloth wallpaper is both washable and removable. Line drawers with pretty paper from an art supply store. Enhance the sense of space with a mirror. A big mirror hung on one wall or over the kitchen table reflects light, helps make up for the lack of a window, and increases the feeling of spaciousness. Lay down a rug. You may think it will get irredeemably dirty, but a patterned rug will hide stains and is easy to vacuum. With a nonslip rug pad beneath, it's also nicer to stand on than hard, cold tile. Adorn the table or windowsill with living plants or fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are a simple grace note for any kitchen. Splurge on them to make your space feel more special, or snip evergreen twigs or even flowering weeds from your backyard or on your walk home. Anything alive makes the kitchen feel more welcoming. Paint! Paint is a major tool for the cook with an ugly, dark kitchen. Don't forget the ceiling, where color can instantly make the room more cheerful (think sky blue, lemon yellow, pale washes of bright colors). Painting the entire room can seem daunting, but with careful cleaning, taping, and priming, you can do an expert job by yourself. Supply music or a radio. The companionship of radio is something we appreciate in our kitchens. Faith keeps a Tivoli radio on her windowsill and listens to NPR and podcasts while she cooks; she plugs in an iPod for dinner parties.

Review

"This labor of love from Sara Kate and Faith of The Kitchn feels like the answer to a lot of lingering kitchen questions. The book is a combination of recipes, kitchen lessons, and organizational and storage tips. It’s everything. So very good!" –Joy the Baker"[The Kitchn Cookbook] is essentially a road map for organizing the busiest room in your house, stocking your pantry, and implementing simple tweaks that will make cooking faster, more delicious, and more fun." –Every Day with Rachael Ray Magazine "TheKitchn.com is the go-to site for many home cooks, owing to its warm, friendly editorial voice; its accessible recipes and how-tos; and the glimpses into other people’s kitchens--both figuratively and literally. [The Kitchn Cookbook]’s 150 recipes include one-pot coconut chickpea curry, slow cooker carnitas, and no-bake banana and peanut butter caramel icebox cake. Tips for stocking, organizing, and cleaning your kitchen are also included--the five-minute-a-day plan for a clean kitchen alone makes the book worth the price." –Library Journal "While the book may be called a cookbook, it certainly isn’t just that. One half of the book is recipes, but the other half is what Gillingham and Durand are calling a handbook to a happy kitchen and loving your kitchen more.” –Publishers Weekly

I love cookbooks. I love The Kitchn. So obviously I preordered this cookbook! It's a beautifully presented, nice thick cookbook. I especially love the lack of a useless dust jacket. Dust jackets just get in the way - especially in the kitchen! The cookbook would be great for people just starting to cook or set up their first kitchen. I see new graduates not planning on moving back in with the folks being a primary audience for this book. Sections include how to set up a kitchen, how to deal with a problematic kitchen (e.g., too small), the best tools and serving ware, and the 50 essential skills every cook should know. They start from the basics, like boiling water. That might seem way too basic -- and they acknowledge this -- but I think new cooks would appreciate the great pictures they have illustrating the difference between what a simmering pot of water is compared to a full boil. All of that makes up a full half of the book! So much knowledge! The second half of the cookbook are the recipes. If you are a regular reader of the site, you'll appreciate that this section includes both classic recipes from thekitchn.com (Fruit-on-the-Bottom Yogurt Cups, Slow Cooker Lemon Garlic Chicken) as well as newbies (No-Bake Banana and Peanut Butter Caramel Icebox Cake?! Hello, gorgeous!). Everything is written very clearly with easy to follow directions. As a personal preference, I wish there were more pictures. All in all, a win! Happy to have this book on my shelf, and plan to give it to some seniors come May.

I'm a fan of the Kitchn and a cookbook collector so it was a given that I would preorder this book as soon as the email landed in my inbox. This book would be good for someone just getting their first place or learning to cook. The photos are gorgeous. I love the glossy pages in the first section and wish the entire book was the same quality pages and photos. The tips on setting up your kitchen and tools was informative for someone new to the kitchen. I was disappointed by the time I finally got to the recipes (chapter 6!) and saw that it is a collection of simple recipes for those with basic cooking skills. The title could have more appropriately included the fact that this book really is for the beginning cook. Fortunately the price dropped between the preorder and the ship date so I only paid $20 instead of $29.

This has been a fantastic resource for me as I cultivate a desire and love to cook. I am a late twenty-something who has never enjoyed cooking until the last few years. This book has helped me form a positive attitude about my kitchen and the things in it. She encourages you to put things you love in your kitchen, and to use them because you WANT to. She also acknowledges that not everything in your kitchen will be preserved forever, that tools wear out, and that's okay. It may sound silly, but the permission she gave me to USE my kitchen and LOVE it was a breakthrough! There are many recipes included that I have not been brave enough to try yet, but the things I have made have been delicious!

I expected more from recipes section. The kitchen decoration section is a dream and not a reality in our homes. I began to enjoy book from page 129 - previous are totally unnecessary. Posts from the blog nowadays offer better recipes.

Lovely ideas, good information, detailed instructions, formatting and platforms. Inspiration for months to come. Great cooking try in the month to come.

This book is exactly what I wish I had when I set up housekeeping decades ago. It provides information from how to set up a pantry and how to entertain to basic cooking techniques. The recipes are mostly easy to follow and there are plenty of photos.I bought it as a gift to my (almost) newly wed son and daughter-in-law who just moved into their first house. But not before I kept it long enough to read and copy some recipes!

I love the website that the authors of this book write. Bought the book hoping to be inspired by new recipes. Turns out it's not really for people who already know how to cook. Recipes were not interesting-- and are free on the internet... A lot of the book covers kitchen set-up and techniques. A great buy for a young professional starting out or a newly married couple, but not for people who already cook.

This was an excellent gift for a young 19 year old college student. She had enjoyed the basics and commented on this being a good read and had recipes she'd like to try. Her dorm offers a kitchen she can use and this will help her with more variety in her diet. I'll update when she goes back and uses the book.

Legacy, by Greg Bear

From Publishers Weekly

Hard science and human interest intersect ingeniously in this prequel to Bear's Eon (1987) and Eternity (1988). Twenty-five years after the opening of The Way, a kind of tunnel through space that permits access to different planets and time continua, Olmy Ap Sennon is sent through it to spy on 4000 "divaricates" who fled the starship Thistledown for a utopian existence on the sylvan world of Lamarckia. What he finds, instead, is a full-blown divaricate civil war, whose opposing sides mirror his own ambivalent feelings about life aboard the strictly regimented starship. Olmy and the divaricates work through their respective identity crises against the exuberantly imagined backdrop of Lamarckia, a planet whose integrated ecosystem adapts readily to change. While occasionally numbing in their detail, Bear's meticulous descriptions of flora and fauna serve an important function: they authenticate Lamarckia as a world that assimilates and learns from other organisms, making it the perfect crucible for examining the personal and political dramas staged within it. This is a stunning SF novel that extrapolates a scientifically complex future from the basic stuff of human nature. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

In Legacy's predecessor, Eon (1985), part of Earth's population escaped a nuclear war by traveling through time along a path called the Way. As the sequel commences, the Way has been in use for some time, and dissidents have found ways to drop out more thoroughly than any 1960s hippie ever did. One such dropped-out group consists of 4,000 antitechnological Naderites, to whom a troubleshooter named Olmy is dispatched. He finds them on a settled, Earthlike world and their society taking a host of radically different directions, all of which Bear works out with his accustomed literacy, scientific accuracy, and deft characterization. As much an exercise in world building and social experimentation as a conventional story, the novel will not disappoint Eon's fans and, since Bear really keeps it moving, stands well enough to be read on its own. Eon describes existence inside a technological marvel, a tubular world, full of strange humans. Olmy is an experienced government operative for the Hexamon. Since it separated from Earth, the Way has had a long history- full of conflict and change. It can connect to alternative worlds, some almost recognizable (see Eternity) Interestingly, Mr. Bear hypothesizes: what if dissidents left the Way for its antithesis- and homestead a virgin planet? Never be seen again. Would post-modern humans succeed, or be rejected by the planet? Olmy is offered the assignment to find them. He goes, without supplies or weapons- which means living like a native, dependent on the charity of the migrants. Return can be only with a device in the possession of Able Lenk (leader of the migration). Without finding him, it is impossible. That does not stop settlers from thinking him a judge sent by the Hexamon. They are engaged in civil war. Most would welcome returning to the Way. This is not working as originally planned. Other reviewers dislike leaving the Way; Olmy will grieve for it. Because they did not bring technology from the Way, we see what ordeals settlers must endure. Lamarkia is a vision of where evolution might have gone on our Earth. This prequel is a fascinating study of humans caught in the tumult of planetary change. Isn't that what Scify is about?

This prequel to Eon is an interesting introduction to the remarkable world of Lamarkia and its inhabitants. Bear's imagination never seems to diminish. His new world is an interesting concept . His treatment of the human reaction to it is somewhat predictable, but also quite reasonable given humanities previous interactions with new worlds. An unfortunate inclination for violent intercourse and power grubbing seem to follow us wherever we go. Will Lamarkia be any different?Bear really brings a story to life. A remarkable author writing of a remarkable world. Follow The Way to his world of Lamarkia.

I liked the general plot line of a group of people that had been traveling through space for hundreds of years in search of a new planet inside of an asteroid used for mining operations. I also liked the interactions of the protagonist with his lady friend during their ocean adventure. I also found interesting the subjugation of women once these explorers found their "Eden". Leaving nearly all their technology behind, a sect leaves the asteroid via The Way to an uninhabited planet, where a Lord of the Flies scenario begins to unfold.

If you have the other 2 books in this trio, you must read this one. I bought this book from DRs Books. Received as shown in timely manner from across the country. It was weather-proof wrapped, and came with a nice book marker and a thank you card

There are some interesting and clever ideas about how humans could live on planets woth dfft ecos. I'll be moving on to the next book in the series.

You can always count on Greg Bear for well plotted stories, creative writing and inventive ideas. He always holds my interest and this book was no exception.

I thought this book was a SciFi book and I guess it was but it was so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I hope that the next two will be as good.

Good follow up to Eon
